  SIGHTSEEING IN VARANASI

AroundVaranasi is a car hire/car rental agency that is run by people who are passionate about traveling. We understand that not everyone intends to tread the beaten path. There are many who seek beyond the obvious and would like to explore beyond the regular tourist hotspots. Here are some of my favorite places in Varanasi.

  • Aghoracharya Baba Kinaram Ashram - This is a school of the oldest sect of 'Aghori' sadhus in India.Aghori's are revered by some while being feared by many. Some Aghori sadhus are believed to endorse a strange way of life that includes eating human flesh, drinking urine and having sex with dead bodies - all in the quest for attaining super natural powers. The Aghor Ashram is a more refined school of thought that does not subscribe to such practices anymore and is open to all to visit and partake in their rituals and ceremonies. It has a water tank called the Kreen Kund whose waters are known to have magical powers capable of curing you of any disease. The ashram is close to Bhelupur Chauraha in Varanasi in Ravindrapuri colony.

  • Manikarnika Ghat - This is one of the more famous of the Varanasi ghats where Hindus bring their dead for cremation. There is a fire here thats been burning for the 4 centuries, it is claimed and is never allowed to die out. Burning logs from this fire is used to light the funeral pyre. It's not for everyone but there is something about the place that leaves a deep impact.

  • House of the Indian warrior Princess, Rani Lakshmi Bai - The legendary queen was born in Varanasi who once struck terror in the hearts of the British troops at the time of the first war of independence. What was once the house of her father Morepant Tambe is now dilapidated structure. There is a marble placard that identifies the house.

  • The Buddhist Temples in Sarnath- Visitors to Sarnath usually wind up their visit by going through the main stupas and the museum at Sarnath. But beyond the main excavation site in the narrow lanes are some exquisite Buddhist temples set up and run by followers from countries like Japan, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, China etc It is a treat to visit these temples. There are amazing artifacts and ancient maps that trace the spread of Buddhism.

  • Sukrit Valley - Sukrit is a small town that lies on the Varanasi-Robertsganj national highway around 55 kms away from the city. The place is extremely rich in natural beauty. Small tribal villages dot the landscape around a meandering river and the way of life has remained more or less untouched by the curse of civilization. On the way is Lakhania Dari which is home to some ancient rock painting, caves and a beautiful waterfall. A Place only for those who are avid nature lovers and hate the crowds.

  • Bharat Kala Bhavan - Located inside the BHU campus near Lanka, this is an art and architecture museum that houses a vast collection of paintings, Hindu and Buddhist sculptures and other materials of archeological importance. It has a great collection of miniature paintings from the courts of Mughals and other Kingdoms and principalities. A must visit for those who appreciate ancient art and architecture.

  • Jaunpur - This is another city that lies at a distance of around 60 kms from Varanasi and has some ancient buildings which display a unique architectural style, combining traditional Hindu and Muslim motifs with purely original elements. Prominent among them are the Atala Masjid, Jama Masjid and the Lal Darwaza Masjid. There is an old bridge over the Gomti River that dates back to year 1564 AD.
